Incontinence Prevention: Healthy Older Adults
Research Priorities (Not in order of priority)
  • Prospective longitudinal study
  • Relationship of urinary and defecation problems.
  • Effect of general fitness and mobility.

Clinical evidence (Indicates what is known about preventing incontinence)

Investigated Risk Factors:

  • Previous genito-urinary surgery
  • Impaired mobility.
  • Chronic cough.
  • Functional disability.
  • Stroke.
  • Respiratory illness.
  • Sedatives and hypnotics.
  • Fecal incontinence or impaction.

Current research has not proven the importance of:

  • bacteriuria without dysuria, caffeine, alcohol, race, ethnicity.

It was noted that studies have largely been cross-sectional and have not fully considered the effect of confounding factors.
